The Fairy Meadows

The Fairy Meadows which is also lacally known as Joot is the glamour of Pakistan which people have called “Heaven on Earth”. The name “Fairy Meadows” was given to it by German climbers named German Märchenwiese. Fairy Meadow is a grassland on one of the base camp sites of Nanga Parbat located in Diamer District, Gilgit-Baltistan which give a breath taking view of Nanga Parbat (The killing mountain). Besides nature lovers Fairy Meadow is always been a great experience for the bagpackers, climbers, wildlife researchers and photographers. The Altitude of Fairy Meadow is about 3300 meters above the sea level. It serves to be the starting point for trekkers summiting on the Rakhiot face of the Nanga Parbat. The Government of Pakistan announced the Fairy Meadows as National Park.

Location

First of all one can approach to Fairy Meadow by a twelve kilometer long trek starts from Raikhot bridge which is at altitude of altitude of 4595 feet (1400 meters) above sea level and about 540 kilometers from Islamabad , on Karakoram Highway and ends on a village called Tato. But the trek from Raikhot to Tato is a jeepable trek (you can hire any local jeep there). Further from Tato, there is a five kilometer hiking trek to Fairy meadows which takes you about 4 to 5 hours time. Since 1992 the locals of the area have operated camping sites in the area.

Tourism

There is a six months tourism season which starts in april and cotinuous to the nd september but the best time to visit Fairy Meadows is july and august. There are two tourist lodges , one is called “riakhot serai” and the other is called as “The site of Fairy Meadow” which is partially developed but it generates about 17 million ruppees from tourism by providing the tourists food, tranportation and accommodation services. A project to start a Hotel by Shangri La Resots was stoped when the Government of Pakistan announced Fairy Meadows as a National Park. The locals of the area stopped the cutting of trees to protect the forest and promote tourism in the area. That is the reason it is considered to be the most virgin forest which is home to a vaste numbers of species of birds and animals.

The Fairy Meadow Cottage

There is a place opposite to the Fairy Meadows Cottage which is known as Pari Mahal which mean Fairy Palace named by the famous Japanese photographer, Fujita Heroki. The Fairy Meadows Cottages are at 8 minutes hike from the main village and other tourist resorts with its breath taking natural view of great Nanga Parbat.

Nanga Parbat which is also known as the killing mountain in the 9th highest mountain in all over the worls and is the second highest moutain in Pakistan after K2. Nanga Parbat is the western anchor of the Himalayas, and is the western most eight-thousander. It lies just south of the Indus River, in the Diamir District of the Gilgit Baltistan of Pakistan.
